Student Support
Helping Students Connect and Belong
At SCLI, we believe students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected.
Our staff work closely with students, host families, parents, and partner schools in Japan to ensure that each student enjoys a positive and rewarding experience in New Zealand.
The staff at SCLI and host parents help students to find and join sports clubs, gyms and youth groups, and enrol for music tuition.
By joining clubs and groups outside of school, students get the chance to make friends and use their English more.
Evening classes at local high schools are affordable and offer students a chance to experience many new activities.

We are here to support you
Our school advisor, Taeko Roberts, is a Japanese national and is available at school once a week.
Support is available in Japanese.
Students are also able to contact her in an emergency at any time.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns regarding cultural or lifestyle differences.
We are here to support you, so you don't have to deal with them on your own.
Our aim is to help students quickly feel at home and become active, confident members of the SCLI community.
We provide a comprehensive orientation programme to help students settle into life in Christchurch and feel confident in their new environment.
The orientation includes support with daily life, school expectations, safety, transport, communication, and adjusting to New Zealand culture.
The orientation and camping

At the beginning of the year students and staff go on a camp for two nights and three days.
This camp is primarily to get to know each other better, to learn to work together and also to have fun trying out some typical New Zealand activities.
Tours
Students can join organised tours that will take them to some of the best places New Zealand has to offer.
The tours are led by qualified instructors and students have the chance to try such activities as swimming with the dolphins, whale watching, jet boating, horse riding, star gazing and relaxing in hot springs.
*These trips are run by Adventure Specialties Trust and the cost of these trips is not included in the school fees.

As a signatory to the NZQA Tertiary and International Learners Code of Practice, SCLI is committed to supporting the wellbeing, safety, and success of all students.
The Code sets out the standards New Zealand education providers must follow to ensure learners are well cared for during their studies.
